The Government of India has initiated efforts to expand and strengthen inland water transport by utilizing the Tripura’s Gomati River as part of a broader strategy to improve connectivity in the Northeast region. This was stated by Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

Addressing the significance of waterway development during his visits in Tripura, Sonowal said that the initiative is being undertaken in line with the Government of India’s Act East Policy, which aims to transform the Northeast into a vital connectivity hub linking India with Southeast Asian nations. He emphasized that the development of both inland waterways and land transport infrastructure is a key component of this vision.

According to the Minister, the Gomati River has considerable potential to emerge as an important inland water transport corridor, facilitating the movement of goods and passengers while boosting economic activities in the region. The ongoing efforts to develop navigable waterways are expected to complement existing road and rail networks, thereby creating a multi-modal transport ecosystem in Tripura.

Sonowal noted that the strategic location of Tripura places it at the forefront of India's engagement with neighboring countries in Southeast Asia. By strengthening transport and logistics infrastructure, the state is being positioned as a gateway to international trade and regional cooperation under the Act East framework.

The Union Minister further stated that improved connectivity through waterways would not only enhance trade opportunities but also support tourism, generate employment, reduce transportation costs, and contribute to the overall socio-economic development of the state and the Northeast region.

The initiative reflects the Centre’s commitment to unlocking the economic potential of the Northeast by integrating it more closely with national and international markets. With the development of the Gomati River waterway and other connectivity projects, Tripura is expected to play a pivotal role in India's efforts to expand trade and people-to-people links with Southeast Asia.

Officials believe that the expansion of inland water transport infrastructure will open new avenues for commerce and strengthen Tripura’s position as a key logistics and connectivity hub in the eastern part of the country.
