In a unique and meaningful celebration of World Environment Day, a pioneering initiative titled “Prabeen Ban” (Forest of Experience) was launched at Uptakali SB School in Jubrajnagar under the presence of North Tripura District Magistrate and Collector Chandni Chandran, IAS. The programme stood out from conventional tree-plantation drives by placing senior citizens at the heart of the environmental movement, creating a lasting green legacy for future generations.

Defying heavy rainfall, elderly residents of the locality enthusiastically participated in the plantation drive within the school campus. Each sapling planted by the senior citizens was tagged with a nameplate bearing the planter’s name, transforming the initiative into a living memorial and a symbol of intergenerational responsibility. The saplings, protected within a boundary wall, collectively form the “Prabeen Ban” — a forest representing the wisdom, experiences, and contributions of the region’s elders.

Adding a distinctive dimension to the initiative, every student of the school has adopted a sapling and pledged to nurture it throughout its growth. Organisers described the programme as an effort not only to increase green cover but also to instil environmental values and a sense of responsibility among young learners.

As part of the observance, an art competition was organised for students, encouraging them to express their ideas and concerns regarding environmental conservation through creative works.

The event was conducted in a subdued and respectful manner in view of the recent demise of former Minister Fayzur Rehman. No formal stage programme was held, and all attendees observed a one-minute silence in memory of the departed leader, praying for the eternal peace of his soul.

The programme was organised under the leadership of Jubrajnagar Block Development Officer Prasenjit Malakar. Among the distinguished guests present were North Tripura Zilla Parishad Sabhadipati Aparna Nath, Jubrajnagar Panchayat Samiti Chairperson Aparna Debnath, Additional District Magistrate (PP) L Darlong, and North Tripura Divisional Forest Officer Suman Malla, along with other officials and community members.

The “Prabeen Ban” initiative has been widely appreciated as an innovative model of environmental stewardship that bridges generations. By entrusting children with the care of trees planted by elders, the programme has successfully combined ecological conservation with the transmission of values, creating a living legacy that will continue to grow for years to come.

“A small initiative, but one that plants both trees and values for the next generation.”
