Congress–CPI(M) Led Save Constitution Forum Registers Resounding Victory in Tripura Bar Association Election, Wins 10 of 15 Seats

The Congress–CPI(M) backed Save Constitution Forum secured a sweeping victory in the Tripura Bar Association election for the 2026–2028 term, winning 10 of the 15 executive posts and handing a major defeat to the BJP-backed Lawyers Development Forum, which managed to secure only five seats.

The election witnessed enthusiastic participation from the legal fraternity. Out of 601 eligible voters, 530 advocates exercised their franchise, registering a turnout of more than 88 percent. Counting continued till around 11:59 pm amid tight security arrangements, with a large police deployment in and around the court premises to ensure a peaceful process.

The most significant victory came in the presidential contest, where Pritha Deb Paul of the Save Constitution Forum was elected President with 186 votes, defeating BJP-backed candidate Mrinal Kanti Biswas, who secured 165 votes. Jiban Krishna Sen won the post of Vice-President with 221 votes, defeating Dhananjay Debbarma, who received 104 votes.

For the post of General Secretary, Bhaskar Debbarma emerged victorious with 298 votes, defeating BJP-backed candidate Bidyut Sutradhar, who secured 177 votes. In the Assistant Secretary (Women Reserved) category, Mallika Saha won convincingly with 313 votes against Chatali Bhattacharjee, who polled 207 votes. In the Assistant Secretary (General) category, Bhabani Ranjan Bhattacharjee secured victory with 219 votes, while Mintu Debbarma and Mridul Kanti Artha received 192 and 101 votes respectively.

In the Members category under the Women Reserved seats, Ruthi Debbarma was elected with 322 votes, followed by Likha Bhowmik with 280 votes and Bhandari Reang with 237 votes. In the General Members category, Swarup Pandit secured 342 votes, Niladri Mukherjee 313 votes, Debabrata Debnath 306 votes, Kishor Roy 291 votes, Debjyoti Debnath 271 votes and Anirban Lodh 266 votes, all emerging victorious.

The outcome is being widely viewed as a clear endorsement of the Save Constitution Forum by Tripura's legal community. Supporters of the forum described the verdict as a victory for constitutional values, democracy and the independence of the legal profession. They expressed gratitude to the advocates who participated in the election and congratulated all the successful candidates.

According to the final results, 10 of the 15 elected office-bearers and members belong to the Congress–CPI(M) backed Save Constitution Forum, while the BJP-backed Lawyers Development Forum secured only five positions. The scale of the victory has generated considerable discussion within both legal and political circles, with many observers viewing it as a reflection of the mood among a significant section of Tripura's educated and professional community.

The newly elected executive committee is expected to assume charge shortly and lead the Tripura Bar Association for the 2026–2028 term with a strong mandate from advocates across the state.
