Two tribal labourers tragically die in landslide, monetary assistance given

In a tragic incident two tribal youths died on the spot when huge block of soft earth fell on them when they were cutting down an upland for earth while the driver of the earth carrying truck sustained serious injuries and is battling for life in GBP hospital . The tribal welfare minister Bikash Debbarma and the SDM (Teliamura) Apurba Krishna Chakraborty visited the spot and gave cheques of Rs 4 lakh each to the agonized family members of the two deceased labourers and conveyed their condolences.

Giving details , sources from Teliamura said that this morning two tribal labourers James Jamatya (20) and Ashahari Jamatya (22) had gone to the Muslim basti area near Chakmaghat under Teliamura police station for earth cutting work on a truck driven by Amulyadhan Jamatya (30) around 9-00 in the morning. As they had started cutting down earth from a ‘tilla’ (upland) with their spades a huge lump of soft earth fell on them including on the driver. Sensing trouble the local people rushed to the spot and with great difficulty dragged out the driver Amulyadhan Jamatya and sent him to Teliamura hospital. He was referred to GBP hospital, Agartala because of his critical condition . But the two other earth-cutter labourers , James Jamatya and Ashahari Jamatya had breathed their last under the weight of the lump of earth before they were also dragged out .

There was an air of all-round grief and mourning in the entire area and after being informed of this , the minister of tribal welfare Bikash Debbarma whose Krishnapur assembly constituency covers the Chakmaghat area rushed to the spot along with SDM (Teliamura) Apurba Krishna Chakraborty . They conveyed their condolences to the bereaved families and handed over cheques of Rs 4 lakh each to them while conveying condolences to the families. Sources said that unscientific earth cutting work and non-availability of proper equipments often lead to accidents and fatalities of this sort and people there demanded steps from the government to make available proper and scientific instruments for the risky earth cutting work.
