The Tripura Government has initiated a magisterial inquiry into the mysterious death of 24-year-old Manisha Das, whose body was recovered from a room in the girls' hostel of Shantiniketan Medical College earlier this week. Acting on the directives of the Home Department, West Tripura District Magistrate and Collector Dr. Vishal Kumar, IAS, personally visited the institution on Thursday and launched a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Manisha Das, a resident of Kathaltali under Amtali Police Station, had been employed at the medical college and was reportedly assigned duties in the institution's examination cell after previously serving as a caretaker. Her body was discovered inside a hostel room on Wednesday night, triggering widespread concern and demands for a thorough investigation.
During his visit to the medical college, Dr. Vishal Kumar yesterday reviewed the circumstances surrounding the death and examined all relevant aspects of the case on the first day of the inquiry. He interacted with concerned officials, college authorities, and other stakeholders to gather preliminary information and assess the available evidence.
The District Magistrate also met the bereaved family members of the deceased and conveyed his heartfelt condolences. Assuring them of a fair, transparent, and impartial investigation, he emphasized that the administration is committed to uncovering the truth behind the tragic incident.
"The inquiry is presently at a preliminary stage. All facts and circumstances related to the death will be thoroughly examined before any conclusion is reached. The district administration remains committed to ensuring a comprehensive, objective, and lawful inquiry," Dr. Vishal Kumar said during the visit.
According to official sources, the Home Department has directed the District Magistrate to submit a detailed report on the incident within 15 days.
Meanwhile, police investigations are continuing alongside the magisterial probe. Officials stated that the room where the body was found was locked from inside and had to be opened after staff members and students broke down the door. Forensic experts have already visited the scene, and the body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
Addressing the media, Amtali Sub-Divisional Police Officer Paramita Pandey said that investigators are examining the case from all possible angles. She noted that certain preliminary findings have raised suspicion, making it essential to conduct a detailed investigation before arriving at any conclusion.
In a significant development, Amtali Police have arrested a young man identified as Prasenjit Sarkar, who is alleged to have been in a relationship with the deceased. Police produced him before a local court after his arrest as part of the ongoing investigation into Manisha Das's death.
Investigators are examining his role and possible connection to the circumstances leading to the incident. However, police have not yet disclosed specific charges or details of the evidence gathered so far. Officials have maintained that the investigation remains in progress and that all aspects of the case are being thoroughly scrutinized.
Family members of the deceased have expressed doubts over the possibility of suicide and have alleged foul play. They have demanded a comprehensive and impartial investigation to ensure that all aspects of the case are properly examined.
With both police and magisterial inquiries underway, authorities have appealed for patience while investigations continue. The findings of the post-mortem examination, forensic analysis, and the District Magistrate's inquiry report are expected to play a crucial role in determining the circumstances that led to the young woman's death.
The incident has generated considerable public attention across Tripura, with many closely watching the progress of the investigation and awaiting answers regarding the tragic death of Manisha Das. The arrest of Prasenjit Sarkar marks a major development in the case, although investigators have stressed that the final conclusions will depend on the outcome of the ongoing inquiry, forensic findings, and judicial proceedings.
