In a significant move aimed at strengthening sports development and nurturing emerging athletic talent, Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has expressed keen interest in fostering greater cooperation between Maharashtra and Tripura in the field of sports.

During a high-level meeting, a proposal was placed before the Governor for the signing of a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Maharashtra Olympic Association and the Tripura Olympic Association. The proposed agreement seeks to create a structured framework for sports development by providing talented athletes from Tripura and the entire Northeast region with access to Maharashtra’s advanced sports infrastructure and experienced coaching facilities.

The initiative is designed to address one of the major challenges faced by athletes from Northeast India. While the region is widely recognized for producing talented sportspersons across various disciplines, many athletes often struggle to reach their full potential due to limitations in infrastructure, exposure, and access to high-performance training. The proposed partnership aims to bridge this gap by enabling promising athletes to undergo specialized training programmes in Maharashtra under expert supervision.

Governor Jishnu Dev Varma reportedly welcomed the proposal and described it as a constructive step toward strengthening sports development across states. He assured full support for initiatives that create greater opportunities for young athletes and help them compete at national and international levels. The Governor also expressed optimism that sports cooperation between Maharashtra and Tripura would grow stronger in the coming years, benefiting athletes from both regions.

The meeting was attended by Member of Parliament Manoj Kotak, Tripura Olympic Association General Secretary Sujit Roy, Maharashtra Olympic Association General Secretary Sanjay Shete, and Joint Secretary Pradeep Khandare.

Other prominent sports administrators present included Sunder Iyer, General Secretary of the All India Tennis Federation; Anand Lahoti, Treasurer of the Indian Ski and Snowboard Association; and Dayanand Kumar from the Maharashtra Squash Rackets Association.

Sports observers believe that the proposed collaboration could become a landmark initiative for Indian sports development. Beyond strengthening sporting ties between Tripura and Maharashtra, the partnership is expected to create new pathways for talented athletes from the Northeast, providing them with world-class training opportunities and a stronger platform to excel on the national and international stage.
