Swift action has been initiated by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation authorities following the publication of a report in Tripurainfo.com highlighting allegations of prolonged electricity theft through an illegal hook-line connection in Gandhigram on the outskirts of Agartala.

According to official information received after the report was published, a team from the power utility conducted an inspection at the location mentioned in the complaint and detected unauthorized consumption of electricity at the residence of Krishna Das. During the operation, officials disconnected the illegal power supply and seized several materials allegedly used for the unauthorized connection.

The seized items included an electric autocharger, a ½ HP motor, wires, and other associated equipment connected to the unauthorized electricity network.

Following the inspection, the authorities imposed a penalty of Rs.25,632 against the consumer for the detected violation. Officials informed that the penalty amount is scheduled to be realized by tomorrow. The electricity connection will remain disconnected until the entire penalty amount is paid.

According to the action report, restoration of electricity supply will be considered only after realization of the penalty and completion of the required formalities under the applicable electricity regulations.

The enforcement action comes in response to allegations published by Tripurainfo.com based on complaints from local residents of Madhya Para (Debtila), Gandhigram. Residents had alleged that an illegal hook-line connection had been operating in the area for nearly two years and that repeated complaints to the local electricity office had not resulted in effective intervention.

The issue had generated concern among legal consumers who argued that electricity theft causes financial losses to the power utility and indirectly affects honest consumers who regularly pay their electricity bills. The report also highlighted public concerns regarding the prevalence of unauthorized electricity connections in certain localities and the need for stronger monitoring and enforcement mechanisms.

Local residents have welcomed the latest action and expressed hope that similar drives will be conducted in other areas where illegal hook-line connections are allegedly operating. They have urged the electricity department to continue regular inspections to curb power theft and ensure fairness for legitimate consumers.
