A pall of mystery and tension descended over Santiniketan Medical College and Hospital on Thursday after the body of a 24-year-old woman was recovered from a room inside the girls' hostel of the institution. The deceased, identified as Monika Das of Kathaltali, was found hanging in a room on the third floor of the hostel, prompting a major police investigation and allegations of foul play from her family members.

Police from Amtali Police Station rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident and recovered the body. A forensic team also visited the college campus and began collecting evidence from the room and surrounding areas. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, which is expected to play a crucial role in determining the exact cause and circumstances of death.

Speaking to the media, Ranjit Das, Principal of Santiniketan Medical College, said that Monika Das had earlier worked as the caretaker of the girls' hostel but was no longer serving in that role. According to him, she was presently associated with the college's Examination Cell.

The death has triggered serious allegations from the victim's family, who have categorically rejected the possibility of suicide and claimed that Monika was murdered. Family members alleged that she was frequently asked to remain at the college beyond normal working hours in the name of official duties. They demanded a fair, transparent and impartial investigation into the circumstances leading to her death and called for strict action against anyone found responsible.

The incident quickly spread shockwaves across the locality, with residents expressing concern over the circumstances under which the young woman was found dead inside an educational institution. The mysterious nature of the death has fueled speculation and public anger, leading to heightened tension around the college campus.

The case has also brought renewed attention to Santiniketan Medical College and Hospital, which has faced scrutiny in recent years over alleged administrative and regulatory irregularities. The institution had previously come under the scanner of regulatory authorities and judicial bodies following allegations related to infrastructure deficiencies, faculty shortages and irregularities in patient documentation during inspections. Reports concerning alleged fabrication of patient records and other compliance issues had attracted public attention and regulatory review. However, there is currently no evidence linking those earlier allegations to the death of Monika Das, and investigators have not indicated any connection between the two matters.

As police continue their investigation, officers are examining all possible angles, including workplace-related issues, personal circumstances and any other factors that may have contributed to the incident. Investigators are expected to review electronic records, question college staff and examine forensic findings before reaching any conclusion.

At present, authorities have not confirmed whether the death was a case of suicide, homicide or any other form of unnatural death.
