A Government Railway Police (GRP) constable has been arrested following an internal investigation into the escape of a suspected narcotics trafficker from police custody at Belonia.
The incident came to light after police intercepted a vehicle at the Belonia railway station premises on Tuesday and recovered a quantity of cannabis. According to sources, four persons were travelling in the vehicle when the operation was conducted.
While police were examining the vehicle and the seized contraband, three occupants reportedly fled from the spot. One individual was detained and taken to the GRP police station for further questioning.
However, the detainee later managed to escape from custody under circumstances that have raised serious questions within the department. Reports of the escape quickly spread after videos purportedly showing the man running away near the railway station surfaced on social media and were widely circulated.
Following the incident, senior GRP officials from Agartala reached Belonia and launched a detailed inquiry to determine how the accused managed to flee.
During the investigation, searches were conducted and cannabis was allegedly recovered from the room of GRP constable Jatindra Das. Investigators are examining whether the substance is connected to the contraband seized during the operation.
Based on the findings of the preliminary probe, Das was taken into custody and later produced before a court after completion of legal formalities.
Officials have not yet disclosed the quantity of cannabis recovered or confirmed any direct link between the seized narcotics and the constable. The investigation is continuing to ascertain the circumstances behind the escape and to identify any possible involvement of police personnel in the case.
No official statement had been issued by the GRP regarding the matter till the filing of this report.
