A political controversy has erupted in Tripura following BJP MLA and government chief whip Kalyani Roy’s visit to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital, where her public criticism of a senior health official sparked widespread debate and drew sharp reactions from the Opposition.
Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Sunday criticised Roy’s public reprimand of the Sub-Divisional Medical Officer (SDMO), arguing that administrative shortcomings should be addressed through institutional mechanisms rather than public confrontation.
Speaking to the media, Chaudhury said that elected representatives have every right to review public services and hold officials accountable. However, he maintained that such issues should be dealt with through formal review meetings and administrative channels instead of public displays that could undermine officials and create unnecessary controversy.
Referring to the incident at Teliamura Hospital, Chaudhury stated that public representatives should exercise restraint while interacting with government officials, even when lapses in service delivery are identified. He suggested that the MLA could have convened a review meeting in the presence of senior officials to address the matter more effectively.
The CPI(M) leader further alleged that the manner in which the issue was highlighted on social media appeared aimed more at generating publicity than solving the underlying problems. According to him, videos and photographs of Roy’s interaction with hospital authorities went viral, turning an administrative issue into a political controversy.
Chaudhury argued that the incident reflected deeper structural problems within Tripura’s healthcare system. He claimed that blaming individual officials alone would not resolve the crisis, pointing instead to an acute shortage of doctors, nurses and other healthcare personnel across the state.
He alleged that many sanctioned posts in the health sector remain vacant and that the government has increasingly relied on contractual appointments under the National Health Mission (NHM) rather than making permanent recruitments. According to him, the shortage of manpower has adversely affected healthcare delivery in several hospitals and health institutions.
The controversy originated after Kalyani Roy visited Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital on June 6 and reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over the hospital’s functioning. During the inspection, she publicly questioned the SDMO, identified as Raja Jamatia, regarding various administrative and healthcare-related issues. The incident gained significant attention after videos circulated widely on social media. Reports indicated that the SDMO became emotional during the exchange.
Responding to Chaudhury’s criticism, Kalyani Roy strongly defended her actions and rejected the Opposition’s allegations. She asserted that Tripura’s healthcare sector has witnessed substantial improvements under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, himself a medical professional.
Roy stated that the Opposition leader had failed to appreciate the reality of the situation and highlighted what she described as major advancements in the state's healthcare infrastructure. She pointed to the expansion of medical colleges, an increase in postgraduate medical seats, the upgrading of hospitals, and the availability of super-speciality healthcare services within the state.
The BJP MLA also cited the establishment of a dedicated dental hospital and ongoing efforts to launch an eye hospital as examples of the government's commitment to strengthening healthcare services. She claimed that the healthcare delivery system in Tripura had undergone a significant transformation in recent years.
Roy maintained that her visit was motivated by concerns raised by local residents and patients and that elected representatives have a responsibility to ensure that public institutions function efficiently. She argued that identifying shortcomings and demanding accountability from officials are part of that responsibility.
The incident has now evolved into a broader political debate over governance, accountability and the functioning of Tripura’s healthcare system. While the Opposition has accused the ruling party of using public criticism for political publicity, the BJP has defended the hospital inspection as a legitimate exercise aimed at improving public services.
As the debate continues, the episode has once again brought attention to challenges facing the healthcare sector, including manpower shortages, service delivery concerns and the balance between administrative accountability and institutional decorum.
