In a remarkable celebration of literature and storytelling, the literary organization Golper Jonno (For Stories), one of Northeast India’s prominent platforms for short story discourse, successfully organized a day-long “Golpo-Gadya Porikrama” (Story and Prose Conclave) at Sukanta Academy in Agartala on Saturday. The event witnessed overwhelming participation from writers, scholars, students, and literature lovers, reaffirming the city’s deep appreciation for serious literary discussions.
From morning until late evening, the auditorium remained packed as audiences listened attentively to thought-provoking sessions on storytelling, literary criticism, and multilingual literary traditions. The enthusiastic response demonstrated the enduring appeal of literary dialogue among readers and cultural enthusiasts in Tripura.
The programme commenced with the highly popular “Eso Golpo Likhi” (Let’s Write Stories) competition, which attracted enthusiastic participation from students representing various schools in the state capital. The formal inauguration took place at 11 am with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by an opening musical performance by artists of Surjharna.
The inaugural session was attended by prominent personalities including Subrata Chakraborty, Vice-Chairman of the State-Level Cultural Advisory Committee of the Tripura Government, and noted academician Prof. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, former Vice-Chancellor of Assam University. The session was presided over by veteran storyteller Dulal Ghosh, President of Golper Jonno.
One of the major highlights of the event was the relaunch of “Golpik,” a literary magazine dedicated to stories and prose, which returned to publication after several decades. The revival of the magazine generated considerable excitement among readers, writers, and literary circles.
In recognition of their sustained contribution to the development of storytelling in Northeast India, distinguished writers Madhuri Lodh and Sunil Debbarma were conferred the prestigious “Golper Jonno Sammanana 2026” during the programme.
The conclave featured several engaging panel discussions covering a wide range of literary themes. Sessions included “Stories and Our Times,” explorations of storytelling traditions in Assamese, Kokborok, Manipuri, and Chakma languages, discussions on the challenges and adversities faced by writers, and a concluding scholarly session titled “The Direction of Bengali Literary Criticism Over the Last Twenty-Five Years.” Eminent speakers and literary experts participated in these deliberations, enriching the intellectual atmosphere of the gathering.
The cultural segment added further charm to the event, with captivating musical performances by renowned artists Purni Basu, Arijita Dhar, Tanumoy Biswas, Debjani Bhattacharjee, Badal Chakraborty, and Mourita Roy.
More than a hundred writers and storytellers from different districts of Tripura attended the programme, making it one of the most significant literary gatherings held in the state in recent times.
Organizers expressed satisfaction over the overwhelming response and described the event as a major success. They reiterated their commitment to promoting literary culture and sustaining meaningful engagement with storytelling and prose writing in the years ahead.
The memorable day-long conclave not only celebrated literature but also reinforced Agartala’s position as an important centre of literary and cultural discourse in Northeast India.
