In the face of massive student discontent the higher education department has been forced to stall the transfer of assistant professor history, Sushil Koloi from the Vidyasagar college in Belonia . The letter containing the cancellation of the transfer order reached the principal of the college Manoranjan Das yesterday to celebration by irate students who had launched an agitational programme last month in protest against his transfer.

Sources from Belonia said that Vidyasagar college of Belonia , the second degree college of Tripura next to the MBB college, is terribly short of teachers because of dilly-dallying of state government in appointing college teachers . It was on May 22 that the transfer order Sushil Koloi, assistant professor of history, had reached the college and the students of the college flared up in protest . After the college principal Manoranjan Das had expressed his helplessness in the matter the students launched a full-fledged agitation programme by locking up the college gate to have the transfer stalled on May 25 . The department of higher education officials spoke to the agitating college students on the matter and finally the transfer order was cancelled.

Sources said that the Belonia college is hamstrung by terrible shortage of teachers because of the indifference and lack of initiative on the part of the higher education department and the state government at large . There are single teaches in the departments of Bio-chemistry, Information Technology, Environmental Science, Human Physiology, Bengali ,Commerce, Education and Kokborok. There are two teachers each in the departments of Botany, Geology, Mathematics, English , Political Science and Economics while there are three teachers each in the departments of Physics, Chemistry, Geography , Philosophy and Sanskrit . Since Sushil Koloi has been a popular teacher with the students , they erupted in protest against his transfer even though students in other departments are also very angry over shortage of teachers . Soon there may be fresh bout of protests by students in other departments with demands for posting of adequate number of teachers, sources added.
