Odisha cadre IAS officer from Tripura Dhiman Chakma has been reinstated into government service and appointed as Deputy Secretary in the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, nearly a year after his suspension following his arrest in a high-profile bribery case.
A native of Tripura and a 2021-batch IAS officer, Chakma had been serving as Sub-Collector of Dharmagarh in Odisha’s Kalahandi district when he was arrested by Odisha Vigilance officials on June 8, 2025. According to vigilance authorities, he was allegedly caught while accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh at his official residence.
Following his arrest, Chakma was produced before a court, which rejected his bail plea and remanded him to judicial custody. During subsequent searches conducted by vigilance officials, cash amounting to Rs 47,47,600 was reportedly recovered from his residence. Vigilance teams also carried out raids and investigations at locations linked to the officer as part of the corruption probe.
Despite the pending legal proceedings, the Odisha government has now reinstated Chakma and assigned him to the Revenue and Disaster Management Department as Deputy Secretary. The reinstatement was notified by the state government on May 21, 2026.
Official sources indicated that the reinstatement has been made pending the final outcome of the corruption case and related departmental proceedings. Under service rules, a government employee under suspension may be reinstated while investigations or court proceedings continue, subject to administrative decisions and applicable regulations.
The decision has attracted considerable attention on social media and online platforms, where many users have questioned the timing of the reinstatement while the corruption case remains under judicial consideration. Others have pointed out that reinstatement does not amount to exoneration and that the legal process is yet to reach its conclusion.
The case remains one of the most widely discussed corruption allegations involving a young IAS officer in Odisha in recent years.
