Tripura Health and Family Welfare Department Secretary Kiran Kumar Dinkarrao Gitte, IAS conducted an extensive inspection of Dharmanagar District Hospital on Saturday, reviewing healthcare infrastructure, patient services, and future expansion plans. The visit comes at a time when concerns are emerging within the state's healthcare community following an alleged public reprimand of medical personnel at Teliamura Hospital by a local legislator.
During his visit to Dharmanagar, the Health Secretary held a detailed review meeting with senior officials to assess the quality of healthcare services and identify areas requiring further development. The inspection was attended by North Tripura District Magistrate Chandni Chandran, IAS, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dipak Chandra Haldar, World Health Organization State Medical Officer Dr. Ratnadeep Saha, Dr. Sribas Debbarma, the State Immunization Officer, and other senior officials of the Health Department.
The Secretary toured several key sections of the hospital, including the Outpatient Department (OPD), Indoor Patient Department (IPD), Emergency Services, and Patient Facilitation Centres. He reviewed the availability of medical equipment, healthcare infrastructure, patient care mechanisms, and the functioning of healthcare personnel.
Following the inspection, a high-level review meeting was held involving officials from the Health Department, Public Works Department, and Drinking Water and Sanitation Department. Discussions focused on the hospital's current status, infrastructure requirements, ongoing development projects, and future healthcare expansion plans.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Kiran Gitte highlighted several major healthcare initiatives already underway at Dharmanagar District Hospital. He stated that a modern Cancer Day Care Centre has already been made operational, enabling cancer patients in the region to access specialized treatment closer to home. He also noted that improved diagnostic facilities have significantly enhanced the hospital's capacity to provide advanced medical investigations locally.
The Health Secretary further informed that construction work on the Trauma Care Centre and Critical Care Unit (CCU) within the hospital campus is nearing completion. These facilities are expected to become operational soon, strengthening emergency and critical care services for accident victims and seriously ill patients across North Tripura.
He emphasized that the state government remains committed to upgrading district healthcare facilities through infrastructure development, recruitment of additional healthcare personnel, installation of modern medical equipment, and continuous improvement of patient services.
Meanwhile, even as the Health Secretary was reviewing healthcare expansion in Dharmanagar, a separate development at Teliamura Hospital in Khowai district has reportedly triggered widespread resentment among doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers across Tripura.
According to reports, Teliamura MLA Kalyani Roy allegedly entered the chamber of Medical Officer Dr. Raja Debbarma, summoned hospital staff, and addressed them publicly through a Facebook Live session. During the interaction, the MLA is alleged to have made remarks directed at the hospital administration, including the Medical officer and healthcare employees, which many in the medical fraternity have reportedly considered objectionable and humiliating.
The incident has sparked discussions and dissatisfaction within sections of the state's healthcare workforce. However, no formal public reaction has yet been issued by major doctors' or nurses' organizations. Sources indicate that many employees remain reluctant to comment openly on the matter.
As of now, there has been no official statement regarding the controversy from the Health Department, the Health Minister, or Chief Minister Manik Saha.
The incident has brought into focus the broader issue of maintaining professional dignity and a constructive working environment within healthcare institutions, even as the government continues its efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery across Tripura.
