The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has strongly protested what it called the ‘clandestine hike’in power tariff by the Tripura State Electrical Corporation (TSECL). In a statement the PCC spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty said that the TSECL authority have been pick-pocketing the power consumers across the state through ‘smart metre fraud’and administered hike in tariff repeatedly over the past eight years. “At a time when the people of the state continue to reel under a torrid heat wave there are frequent power cuts and but consumers are being forced to pay higher tariffs effected in a clandestine manner” said Prabir.
He pointed that since last month exorbitant hikes of Rs 70-75 as fixed charge and Rs 200-250 as fuel charge have been put into effect , putting an unbearable burden on consumers without corresponding improvement in power supply. “As high as an amount of Rs 3.5 crores has been looted from the TSECL’s fixed deposit and dubious private entities are being allowed to fleece the ordinary power consumers of the state by the TSECL and power department” said Prabir . He further alleged that the TSECL is now reeling under a debt burden of Rs 1000 crores and to make up for the loss the ordinary power consumers are being exploited through hiked tariffs . The power tariff has been raised consistently over the past eight years while ‘another big fraud is being perpetrated in the name of installing smart metres’ added Prabir.
He also pointed out the problem faced by people all over the state including the state capital , Agartala from frequent and protracted power cuts and load shedding for over 6/7 hours . “Ünless the latest hike enforced clandestinely is withdrawn and power services improved the Congress will be forced to launch a statewide agitation against the state government in general and power department in particular” said Prabir.
