A surprise inspection by Teliamura MLA and Chief Whip of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Kalyani Roy, at Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital on Saturday has triggered widespread debate over the state of healthcare administration in Tripura and the manner in which elected representatives interact with government employees.

During her visit, Roy expressed strong dissatisfaction over the alleged mismanagement, infrastructural deficiencies, and shortcomings in healthcare services at the hospital. Accompanied by members of the digital media, she reportedly conducted a live inspection and questioned doctors, nurses and health officials on camera regarding the functioning of the institution.

According to eyewitnesses and hospital staff, the MLA became visibly agitated while reviewing the condition of the hospital. She allegedly used strong language while demanding explanations from senior medical authorities regarding various shortcomings. The situation reportedly became uncomfortable enough that some officials attempted to avoid the live camera coverage, while questions were raised directly to health officials, including health administrator Raja Jamatia.

The incident has generated mixed reactions among healthcare workers, government employees and members of the public.

Doctors, nurses and healthcare employees at the hospital have reportedly expressed concern over the manner in which the inspection was conducted. Several staff members argued that while the hospital certainly faces significant challenges, many of these problems stem from long-standing shortages of manpower, inadequate infrastructure, insufficient medical equipment and medicines, and administrative constraints rather than negligence on the part of individual employees.

They alleged that their difficulties were not adequately heard during the inspection and that public criticism in front of junior staff and mobile cameras adversely affected employee morale.

Observers have also questioned whether an elected representative should publicly reprimand senior officials in the presence of subordinate employees and media personnel, particularly when institutional problems may involve systemic administrative shortcomings beyond the control of local hospital authorities.

Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital has reportedly been facing numerous challenges for years, including shortages of doctors, nurses, support staff, medicines and medical equipment. Healthcare workers contend that many of these issues require intervention at higher administrative levels and cannot be resolved solely by local hospital management.
