Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Rajiv Singh, a 1993-batch officer of the Tripura cadre, has assumed charge as Secretary (Security) in the Cabinet Secretariat, marking a significant transition from his challenging tenure as Director General of Police (DGP) of violence-hit Manipur.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Singh’s appointment last month. In his new role, he will oversee security administration under the Cabinet Secretariat, including supervisory control of the Special Protection Group (SPG), the elite force responsible for the close protection of the Prime Minister and eligible members of the Prime Minister’s family residing at the official residence.
Singh succeeds Parag Jain, who has been holding additional charge of the post since November 2024 while serving as chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).
Rajiv Singh’s appointment comes after an eventful and demanding tenure in Manipur, where he was posted as DGP on June 1, 2023, shortly after large-scale ethnic violence erupted between the Meitei and Kuki communities following a tribal solidarity march on May 3, 2023.
The ethnic conflict, one of the most serious internal security challenges faced by the northeastern state in recent years, has resulted in over 260 deaths and the displacement of thousands of people.
