Narcotic trafficking: Convict gets 5 year jail, Rs 50k penalty

A special court in Tripura's Khowai district has sentenced a man to five years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, officials said on Friday.
The Special Judge of the NDPS Court, Khowai, pronounced the sentence after convicting Dipankar Das, a resident of Lalchhara under Khowai Police Station, under Section 21(B) of the NDPS Act, 1985.
According to the court order, Das has been sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 50,000. In default of payment of the fine, he will have to undergo an additional one year of rigorous imprisonment.
The case originated from a seizure of narcotic substances from the accused, following which Khowai Police Station registered a case on December 17, 2023, under Sections 21(B), 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act.
The complaint was lodged by Sub-Inspector Rajendra Reang. Investigation of the case was entrusted to Sub-Inspector Ranjit Sarkar.
After completing the investigation, Sarkar filed the charge sheet before the court on March 31, 2024.
During the trial, the court examined witnesses and considered the evidence placed on record. The accused was convicted on June 2, following completion of the judicial proceedings.
The court pronounced the quantum of sentence on Friday.
