Historic Boost to Higher Education in Tripura as Karbook, Ambassa and Kakraban Colleges Come Under MBB University

In a landmark development that is set to reshape the higher education landscape of Tripura, the Government of India has approved the affiliation of three newly established Government Degree Colleges—Karbook, Ambassa and Kakraban—with Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) University. The approval came through an order issued by the Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education, Government of India, on June 4, 2026. The order grants an exemption under Section 7(2) of the Tripura University Act, 2006, thereby enabling the three colleges to be affiliated with MBB University.
The move follows representations made by the Government of Tripura seeking a review and reconsideration of the provisions of Section 7(2) of the Tripura University Act. The section had stipulated that educational institutions within the state could not be associated with or affiliated to any university other than Tripura University unless specifically exempted by the Central Government. Responding to the state's request, the Centre exercised its powers under the proviso to the section and directed that the restriction would not apply to General Degree College, Ambassa, General Degree College, Kakraban and General Degree College, Karbook.
The decision marks a major policy breakthrough for the state's higher education sector. It clears a long-standing legal hurdle and enables the three institutions to become part of the academic framework of MBB University, Tripura's state university.
