The Tripura Working Journalists Association (TWJA) has expressed deep concern over the increasing incidents of alleged harassment and intimidation of journalists in the state and has strongly condemned the reported misconduct against a photojournalist of Syandan TV.
In a statement issued by the association, TWJA alleged that Subrata Debnath, a photojournalist working with Syandan TV, was subjected to misconduct, harassment, and physical as well as mental abuse by Abhijit Mondal, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of AD Nagar Police Station.
According to the association, the incident occurred while Debnath was present near the Amtali Second Naka area in connection with his professional duties. It was alleged that the police officer behaved in an inappropriate manner with the journalist without any clear reason. The association further claimed that Debnath was forcibly taken into a police vehicle and publicly humiliated, causing him severe mental distress and professional hardship.
The association specifically alleged that journalist Subrata Debnath was physically harassed without any valid reason by the Officer-in-Charge of AD Nagar Police Station. Condemning the incident in the strongest possible terms, TWJA demanded immediate action against Abhijit Mondal. The organization stated that such actions are unacceptable in a democratic society and undermine the freedom and independence of the press.
TWJA stated that the incident represents a serious attack on press freedom and the rights of working journalists. The association noted that Debnath has already submitted a written complaint to the Director General of Police (DGP), Tripura, seeking appropriate action in the matter.
Strongly condemning the alleged incident, the association has demanded an immediate, impartial, transparent, and high-level inquiry. It has urged the authorities to take strict legal action against the accused official if the allegations are found to be true during the course of the investigation.
The journalists’ body also called upon the state administration to ensure the safety, security, and professional freedom of media personnel across Tripura, emphasizing that a free and independent press is essential for a democratic society.
TWJA General Secretary Sunil Debnath said that repeated incidents of alleged harassment of journalists have become a matter of serious concern and stressed the need for effective measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
