While consumers are often warned about chemically treated apples and grapes, a more alarming issue is emerging across Tripura's fruit markets. Large quantities of mangoes brought from other states are reportedly being sold after artificial ripening and chemical treatment, raising serious concerns about food safety and public health.
Allegations are mounting that chemically ripened mangoes are being sold not only through permanent fruit shops but also by numerous roadside vendors and handcart sellers across Agartala. Consumers and health-conscious citizens have expressed concern that despite the widespread availability of such fruits, there appears to be little visible monitoring by the state's Public Health Department or Food Safety authorities.
Food safety experts have repeatedly cautioned against the use of hazardous chemicals such as calcium carbide and certain unauthorized preservatives to accelerate the ripening process and extend the shelf life of fruits. These substances are often used to make mangoes appear attractive and market-ready within a short period.
Medical studies have linked exposure to such chemicals with various health problems, including Mouth ulcers and throat irritation Gastric and digestive disorders.
The issue has gained added relevance after Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to mangoes and India's rich fruit heritage during his recent Mann Ki Baat programme. His remarks highlighted the cultural and agricultural significance of the fruit, often regarded as the King of Fruits in India.
However, concerns over chemical treatment of mangoes continue to affect consumer confidence and India's image in international markets. Food safety advocates argue that strict enforcement of food safety standards is essential to protect both public health and the reputation of Indian agricultural products.
Consumer groups and health-conscious citizens are increasingly calling for Regular inspections of fruit markets and Random testing of mango samples. The Agartala’s Mango lovers demanded strict action against traders using banned chemicals.
