The Tripura Upajati Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP), the tribal wing of the CPI(M), has set a target of enrolling more than one lakh members during its next membership drive beginning in July, party general secretary and former TTAADC chief executive member Radhacharan Debbarma said on Monday.

Addressing a press conference after a two-day state central committee meeting, Debbarma said the organisation had enrolled over 85,000 members during the previous membership campaign and was aiming for a 25 per cent increase this year.

He said the meeting reviewed organisational performance in the recent TTAADC elections and decided to hold extended divisional committee meetings to strengthen the party structure and accommodate new workers.

Debbarma also expressed concern over the employment situation in tribal areas, alleging that many families dependent on shifting cultivation were facing hardship due to unfavourable weather conditions. He claimed that a shortage of livelihood opportunities was forcing some small and marginal farmers to migrate in search of work and urged the government to create jobs in agriculture and horticulture sectors.

The former CEM further alleged that the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) was facing a situation of “policy paralysis” due to the absence of a full-fledged Executive Committee even more than a month after the council elections.

He questioned the delay in constituting the Executive Committee despite the ruling Tipra Motha Party securing a majority in the council. There was no immediate response from the ruling party.
