Tripura Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Monday launched the ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ in the state and said the government aims to bring an additional 11,250 hectares of land under natural farming this year.

The campaign, part of a nationwide initiative, will be conducted in the state from June 1 to June 15 to promote natural farming and create awareness about sustainable agricultural practices.

The minister launched the campaign after inaugurating the newly constructed office building of the Deputy Director of Agriculture at Belonia and two Agriculture Development Research-cum-Training Centres with IT facilities at Bharat Chandra Nagar and Rajnagar in South Tripura district.

Addressing a gathering, Nath said climate change, rising temperatures, pollution and excessive use of chemical fertilisers were posing challenges to agriculture and the environment.

He said 5,550 hectares of land in Tripura are currently under natural farming and 13,875 farmers are associated with the practice.

“This year, another 11,250 hectares of land will be brought under natural cultivation. By the end of the year, the total area under natural farming in the state will increase to 16,800 hectares,” Nath said.

The minister said the awareness campaign would be organised up to the Gram Panchayat level with the objective of expanding the area under natural farming and increasing oilseed cultivation and production.

He urged public representatives and farmers to adopt natural farming practices and reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers by increasing the use of organic manure, compost, cow dung and bio-fertilisers.

According to Nath, 26,661 hectares of land in Tripura are currently under organic cultivation, involving 26,884 farmers.

He said the state government was giving priority to the agriculture sector and was taking steps to prepare an Agriculture Roadmap up to 2047 aimed at reducing production costs and increasing farmers’ income through scientific cultivation and the use of new technology.

The minister also highlighted the ongoing Farmer Registry programme, under which farmers are being provided unique identification numbers to facilitate access to benefits under various government schemes.

“So far, 63,784 farmers have been registered,” he said, urging officials and stakeholders to expedite the registration process.

No immediate reaction was available from opposition parties on the announcement.
