Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Sunday said 95 per cent of the power distribution strengthening work being carried out with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has been completed, while smart meter installation across the state is expected to be finished by October this year.
Nath shared the information after a review meeting chaired by Union Power, Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Chief Minister Manik Saha at the State Guest House here.
The minister said the state's current peak power demand stands at 542 MW, of which 365 MW is available within the state, while the remaining 177 MW is procured from the power market. He attributed the shortfall primarily to inadequate gas supply.
Referring to power sector reforms, Nath said aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses in the state have declined from 40 per cent in 2018 to 18.23 per cent at present.
He said smart meters have already been installed in all 11 KV feeders and distribution transformers. A total of 3,55,158 consumers have so far been brought under the smart metering system, while the remaining 2,16,144 consumers are expected to be covered by October.
According to the minister, prepaid meters have been installed in 5,894 government offices, while 5,347 standalone prepaid meters are also operational. He said a total of 1,59,013 standalone prepaid meters have been installed across the state.
Nath said 95 per cent of the loss-reduction work under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) has been completed and the remaining work is likely to be finished by July.
He added that all works under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) have been completed, while work under the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DA-JGUA) is 90 per cent complete and is expected to be finished by June.
The minister said the ADB-supported distribution strengthening programme has also reached 95 per cent completion and the remaining work is likely to be completed by June.
He further said the state is undertaking a Rs 1,320-crore project to convert the existing 63 MW open-cycle gas turbine plant at Rukhia into a 120 MW combined-cycle gas turbine plant. The project is scheduled for completion by March 2029.
Nath also said that under the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana, rooftop solar installations with a capacity of 12.11 MW have already been commissioned in the state against a target of 150 MW.
