The much-awaited transformation of Agartala's historic Pushpabanta Palace into a world-class luxury heritage hotel is set to gain momentum with the proposed Bhumi Pujan ceremony of Taj Pushpabanta Palace scheduled to be held on June 5, 2026, in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his proposed visit to Tripura.
The project marks a significant milestone in Tripura's tourism and heritage development sector, bringing together the state's rich royal legacy and the hospitality expertise of a Tata Group enterprise. The luxury heritage property is being developed in partnership with the Government of Tripura and is expected to emerge as one of the most prestigious hospitality destinations in Northeast India.
The iconic Pushpabanta Palace, one of Agartala's most recognizable landmarks, has a rich historical legacy. The palace had served as the official residence of the Tripura royal family and later functioned as the Raj Bhavan. Under the ambitious redevelopment project, the heritage structure is being carefully restored while preserving its original architectural grandeur and historical significance.
Sources associated with the project indicated that retrofitting and restoration work on the existing palace structure has already commenced. Special emphasis is being placed on maintaining the heritage character of the building while integrating modern luxury amenities expected from an international five-star hospitality brand.
Once completed, the Taj Pushpabanta Palace will feature approximately 100 luxurious rooms, including four exclusive royal suites and several signature accommodations inspired by the grandeur of the erstwhile Manikya dynasty. The interiors, furnishings and design elements are expected to reflect the royal aesthetics and cultural heritage of Tripura's historic rulers.
The project aims to offer guests an immersive royal experience, combining heritage architecture, traditional design motifs and contemporary hospitality standards synonymous with the Taj brand.
According to project sources, the hotel is expected to begin receiving its initial guests by October 2028. The development is anticipated to significantly strengthen Tripura's tourism infrastructure and attract high-end domestic and international travelers to the state.
Tourism experts believe the Taj Pushpabanta Palace will become a landmark destination, showcasing Tripura's royal heritage to a global audience while generating employment opportunities and boosting the local economy.
The redevelopment of Pushpabanta Palace is being viewed as one of the most important heritage tourism projects undertaken in Tripura in recent years. Besides preserving an important historical monument, the project is expected to place Agartala prominently on India's luxury tourism map.
The proposed Bhumi Pujan ceremony on June 5, in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with Tripura's Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha is likely to formally signal the next phase of development for what is expected to become one of the most iconic heritage hospitality properties in the Northeast region.
Officials and stakeholders are optimistic that the Taj Pushpabanta Palace will serve as a symbol of the successful convergence of heritage conservation, tourism promotion and modern infrastructure development in Tripura.
