Motor biker sentenced to five years imprisonment for killing pedestrian teacher through rash driving

In an order that should sound alarm bells for rash drivers of motor vehicles including motor bikes, the district and session judge of south Tripura Asit Debnath yesterday sentence a biker Gautam Das, a resident of Das Pally area of Sabroom , to five years rigorous imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs 50 thousand yesterday. In the event of non-payment of the fine imposed the convict will be required to serve one more year of rigorous imprisonment.

Giving details of the case sources from Sabroom said that on December 30 in the year 2022 the post graduate teacher Kriti Chakraborty and her husband Malay Chakraborty had been walking along the national highway in the Shastri colony area of Sabroom ,in the evening . At that a speeding motor bike driven by Gautam Das, son of Kiran Das of Das Pally, pushed her down on the road and ran over her. As a result PGT Kriti Chakraborty breathed her last in Sabroom hospital after two days of treatment for head injury. Since the biker had come to the wrong side of the road to hit his wife, the victim’s wife Malay Chakraborty filed a FIR with the Sabroom police station and the case was investigated by sub-inspector Anjan Chakma . The charge-sheet in the case had been filed in 2023 but the case dragged on through a series of hearings in which the prosecution was represented by APP Priyanka Majumder.

The judgment in the case and the final order was passed yesterday by the district and session judge Asit Debnath . However , convicted Gautam Das’s wife and minor daughter who were standing outside the court broke down in tears after hearing the final order and said that they had not received justice in the case. The wife added that her husband was the sole earning member of the family and they would be in dire straits in his absence. She also gave a hint that she would make an appeal to the high court against the district and session court order.
