Alarmed by the rapidly changing demographic profile of the country based on religious identity the union minister for home affairs Amit Shah has recently made a statement that all pucca constructions within fifteen kms of the international border, specially with Bangladesh will be demolished . But the statement has sent shock waves of fear and concern in some states of northeast, specially Tripura. Even though Tripura is vulnerable to infiltration of illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingiyas , the long 856 kmg long border with Bangladesh is land-based with no riverine feature and 10 of the state’s 23 subdivisions including the state capital , Agartala stand on the edge of the border with Bangladesh. In case the 15 km deadline, as stressed by Amit Shah is strictly adhered to even the eastern part of Agartala town and entirety of 9 other subdivisional towns will see total destruction as the pucca constructions there include many governmental institutions including offces, educational establishments, Tripura Central University (TCU) and other official and private structures as also markets , malls etc.

The union home ministry who is currently on a tour of Rajasthan is likely to visit northeast soon and, according to tentative schedule, he will be at Agartala on June 5 , though the programme schedule is yet to be officially confirmed. But whenever he arrives , this issue is likely to be raised by the state authority for a solution. “ The problem of infiltration from Bangladesh and changing demographic profile is a reality but the measure proposed by the union home minister does not sound very logical ; we must prevent and , if possible , completely stop infiltration but states of northeast bordering Bangladesh have their distinctive problems which must be addressed in a rational and realistic manner before launching the demolition work; the border actually should be guarded more scientifically and strongly” said a leader of Congress, speaking on condition of anonymity.
