Tripura’s Higher Education sector is set to witness significant expansion in the academic session 2026-27 with the introduction of a new Government Women’s Degree College at Nalchar, enhancement of undergraduate seat capacity across Government Degree Colleges and the launch of new academic programmes under the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Stating this, Special Secretary of the Higher Education Department, Raval Hemendra Kumar, IAS, said the state government has taken a series of important initiatives to ensure greater access to higher education, especially for students from rural and underserved areas.

According to him, a new Government Women’s Degree College at Nalchar in Sepahijala district will start functioning from the academic year 2026-27. The institution is being established to provide better opportunities for girls seeking higher education in the region and to strengthen women’s participation in higher studies.

Raval Hemendra Kumar further informed that, in line with the objectives of NEP 2020, the Higher Education Department has been transforming institutions into multidisciplinary centres of learning. As part of this initiative, a new BSc Computer Science programme is being introduced at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE), Kunjaban, with an intake capacity of 30 students. At the same time, the intake capacity of the BA, English Major course at IASE has been increased from 25 seats to 50 seats.

He said that during the academic year 2025-26, the total intake capacity for first-semester admissions in Government Degree Colleges stood at 31,954 seats. Following the establishment of the new women’s college at Nalchar and the addition of new academic programmes, the overall intake capacity has increased by 205 seats. Consequently, the total number of available seats in Government Degree Colleges for the academic session 2026-27 has risen to 32,159.

Highlighting the availability of higher education opportunities, the Special Secretary said approximately 21,026 students passed the Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the Tripura Board of Secondary Education this year. In addition, around 3,941 students passed from Vidya Jyoti CBSE schools operated by the State Government, while nearly 4,000 students cleared the examination from other CBSE institutions, Kendriya Vidyalayas, private schools and open boards. As a result, the total number of students passing the Higher Secondary examination in the state is estimated to be around 28,967.

He pointed out that the number of available seats in Government Degree Colleges now exceeds the expected number of students seeking admission, ensuring that eligible candidates will have adequate opportunities to pursue higher education.

Raval Hemendra Kumar also stated that, as in previous years, the admission process will remain completely transparent and merit-based. The entire admission procedure for undergraduate courses will be conducted online through the SAMARTH Portal of the Government of India, which has now become mandatory under the directives of Tripura University and the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

Merit lists will be prepared by individual colleges according to their approved intake capacities while maintaining the State Reservation Policy. The lists will be displayed on college notice boards and uploaded to the respective college websites.

The Special Secretary further revealed that the state government has already issued gazette notifications for the upgradation of Tripura Institute of Technology (TIT) into Tripura Government Technical University and the upgradation of Women’s College, Agartala into Tripura Government Women’s University. Necessary administrative and academic procedures are currently underway for the establishment of these two universities.

He expressed hope that the latest initiatives would significantly strengthen the higher education ecosystem in Tripura, improve academic accessibility, create new opportunities for students and contribute to the overall educational development of the state.
