A recently circulated admission notification issued by the Office of the Headmaster of Bir Bikram Institution regarding admission to Class XI for the academic session 2026-27 has triggered discussion among students, guardians and education observers over the absence of any mention of fee exemptions for girl students and SC/ST category students.
The notice, dated May 25, 2026, informed applicants seeking admission in Science and Arts streams that the provisional merit list and waitlisted candidates have been displayed on the school notice board. The institution has scheduled the first counselling session on May 29 from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm.
According to the notice, selected candidates have been asked to appear physically with original documents, including admit card, mark sheet, Aadhaar card, PRTC, caste certificate, school leaving certificate, ration card, bank passbook and passport-size photographs.
The notification also stated that if vacancies remain after the first counselling, a second counselling session will be held on June 1 after preparation of a fresh merit list from waitlisted candidates.
However, what has drawn attention is the fee structure mentioned in the notice. The institution listed several charges including development fund, examination fee, Saraswati Puja fee, ID card fee and tie-belt charges, bringing the total admission amount to Rs 1,810.
Many guardians and students pointed out that the notice does not mention whether girl students and SC/ST category students are eligible for admission fee exemptions or concessions under existing government provisions and educational support schemes.
In Tripura, various educational initiatives and welfare schemes have historically provided financial support and fee-related benefits to girl students and students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to encourage higher secondary education and reduce dropout rates. The omission of such information in the admission notice has reportedly created confusion among several applicants.
Some guardians expressed concern that students from economically weaker backgrounds may assume they are required to pay the full admission amount due to the absence of clarification in the official notification.
Education observers believe the school administration may need to issue a clarification regarding applicable fee waivers, concessions or government-supported exemptions for eligible students to avoid misunderstanding during the admission process.
The admission forms, as per the notice, was distributed from the school campus on May 26 between 12 noon and 2:30 pm.
Notably, Bir Bikram Institution in Dharmanagar (North Tripura) is a historic, government-run, co-educational higher secondary school. Established in 1917, it operates under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and focuses on holistic student development.
