Two of the four convicted for sensational murder of bank manager Bodhisattwa Das acquitted by high court

In a significant order the high court of Tripura today acquitted two of the four convicted persons sentenced by the district and session court to life imprisonment earlier on charge of the murder of the young United Commercial Bank (UCO) bank manager of Dharma Nagar Bodhisattwa Das on August 4 2019. There were four accused in the murder, namely, traffic police sub-inspector Sukanta Biswas, Sumit Chowdhury (son of Kalika Jewellers owner), Sumit Banik and hardened criminal Sahid Miah who actually had stabbed Bodhsattwa on the fateful night.
Giving details sources in the court said that It was on August 4 night in the year 2019 Bodhisattwa had been called by the four accused from his Ram Nagar home to come to the Jackson gate area for chatting . After Bodhisattwa arrived there a dispute broke out among the mates and he tried to settle it by arguing with the quartet but suddenly Sahid Miah flared up without rhyme or reason and pierced Bodhisattwa’s abdomen with a broken bottle and he collapsed on the spot. He was taken to GBP hospital in a critical condition by local people and before he lost his sense Bodhisattwa gave a statement to the police personnel who had reached the hospital after being informed of the crime . On the next day Bodhisattwa was taken to Calcutta for treatment but he breathed his last there.
All four accused persons named by Bodhisattwa before his death were arrested by police and the case dragged on for four long years . In June 2023 the district and session court sentenced all four to life imprisonment with a fine of Rs 50 thousand each on them. Sources from court said that life sentence of main killer Sahid Miah had been confirmed earlier by high court also while traffic sub-inspector Sukanta Biswas had not gone on appeal to the high court. The appeal against the district and session court order by Sumit Chowdhury and Sumit Banik had been raised by advocates B.N.Majumder and Subrata Sarkar .
The case was heard by the division bench of Justices T.Amarnath Gour and Sabyasachi Datta Purkayastha today and and finally the bench acquitted both the accused Sumit Chowdhury and Sumit Banik . Advocate Subrata Sarkar who is a criminal law specialist expressed satisfaction over the order and said that true justice has been delivered in the case by the learned judges of the division bench.
