Activists and leaders of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal on Monday submitted memoranda to district administrations across Tripura demanding strict measures to prevent cow slaughter during the upcoming Bakri Eid festival.

Delegations of the organisations met District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police in all eight districts and urged the administration to intensify surveillance in areas considered vulnerable to cattle smuggling and illegal slaughter activities.

VHP leaders also called for stronger legal protection for cows and sought the declaration of the animal as the country’s national animal. They further demanded the establishment of a dedicated research body under the central government for cattle protection and related studies.

Speaking to reporters, VHP leader Shankar Roy said the organisations were concerned over reports of possible cow slaughter in certain places during Eid celebrations. He said cows occupy a sacred place in Hindu beliefs and appealed to the administration to ensure that law and order was maintained.

The memorandum submitted by the organisations alleged that illegal cattle trade and slaughter continue in some regions despite existing laws and called for stricter enforcement measures.

The groups also appealed to religious leaders and prominent members of the Muslim community to help maintain peace and communal harmony during the festival period.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Tafajjal Hossain visited a traditional animal market at Boxanagar ahead of Eid and highlighted the area’s record of communal harmony.

He said people from Hindu and Muslim communities jointly participate in organising the market and support one another during religious festivals.
