Four police personnel posted at Teliamura police station in Tripura’s Khowai district were sent to five-day police remand on Monday in connection with the alleged misappropriation of seized narcotic substances from the police station.

The accused were identified as Sub-Inspector Sampa Das, Inspector and second officer-in-charge Ajit Debbarma, Assistant Sub-Inspector Sachindra Debbarma and Sub-Inspector Rajendra Reang.

According to officials, allegations surfaced that the policemen had assisted narcotics smugglers and illegally diverted seized contraband items, particularly banned cough syrup bottles.

Based on a complaint lodged by the Additional Superintendent of Police, a case was registered at Teliamura police station. Khowai Superintendent of Police B Jagadishwar Reddy constituted a special investigation team to probe the allegations.

Following preliminary findings, all four officials were suspended and later arrested under relevant sections of law. Considering the gravity of the allegations, the investigation was subsequently transferred to the state Crime Branch on the directions of Tripura Police headquarters.

On Monday, the Crime Branch investigating officer produced the accused before the Khowai district and sessions court and sought seven days’ police remand for custodial interrogation.

After hearing both sides, District and Sessions Judge Manabendra Debbarma granted five days’ police remand. The accused will be produced before the court again on May 30.

The case is linked to a seizure made on May 20 during a mobile duty operation in the Maharanipur area of Teliamura, where police had seized a large quantity of Phensedyl cough syrup.

According to allegations, around 1,381 bottles from the seized consignment were illegally diverted and sold. Investigation into the case is underway, officials said.
