The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places in four districts of Tripura and issued a thunderstorm and lightning alert for parts of the state.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Agartala, heavy rainfall between 7 cm and 11 cm is very likely at one or two places in North Tripura, Unakoti, Dhalai and West Tripura districts on Tuesday. Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are also expected at many places across the state.
The IMD also warned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning may occur at isolated places across Tripura during the period.
The forecast for Agartala and adjoining areas indicated generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain or thundershowers.
Weather data showed Agartala received 40.64 mm rainfall till 5.30 pm on Monday, while Kailashahar recorded 24.66 mm during the same period.
Meanwhile, the West Tripura district administration issued an advisory urging people to take preventive measures against drowning incidents during the monsoon season following several fatalities reported in the district over the past two years.
The advisory, issued by the office of the District Magistrate and Collector, said rivers, ponds, streams and other water bodies were flowing at dangerous levels due to heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of accidents.
Parents and guardians were advised not to leave children unattended near water bodies, while villagers were urged to avoid swimming alone or entering unfamiliar water bodies with strong currents or unknown depth.
