The minority communities of Bangladesh -Hindus, Buddists and Christians-confront an uncertain future on account of systematic persecution by the communalized elements among the majority Muslims . Besides discrimination in all spheres , the threat to their existence stems from forced displacement for grabbing valid land , denial of professional opportunities , abduction and rape of women and physical elimination of successful businessmen, professionals and even teachers . This was at its height during the one and half year misrule of the Yunus led interim regime but things have remained almost the same even under BNP rule even though in the last February 12 election to the national assembly the minorities had lent support to the party as an alternative to the fundamentalist Jamat-e-Islami. Since December last year 26 minorities-all of them Hindus-have been murdered by the ‘Momin’ miscreants in Bangladesh and the entire minority community live in fear of lives and losing properties .
This startling report , though otherwise well-known, came to light in a report compiled by the international rights body Eurasia Review , the persecution of minorities is no longer isolated incidents but has become a general pattern. The report has referred to at least fifty specific incidents of land grab by the Muslims from valid holdings held by Hindus in the plainlands of Bangladesh. Apart from this, attacks on religious places of Hindus , the largest minority, have become a regular feature to loot properties as well as to humiliate the defenceless Hindu community of people so that they feel insecure and leave the land of their origin. “The upcoming Bakri-Eid is an occasion which the ‘Momins’ will use to hurt our sentiments and humiliate us by slaughtering cows in front of our houses ; the interesting thing is that the Islamic scripture ‘Quoran’ prescribes only slaughter of camels on EiD which is natural because the faith originated in the deserts of Arabia but in the Indian subcontinent they insist on cow slaughter only to humiliate the Hindus and hurt their sentiments which is considered to be an act of piety ; how can we live in the midst of such fiendish people” an elderly Hindu leader asked .
Apart from all this the Eurasia Review also referred to the continued detention of Hindu monk Chinmay Krishna in jail on totally false and cooked up charge over the past eighteen months since November 2024 without even granting him bail. There was a charge of murder brought against him but when the actual murder or lynching of a Muslim lawyer took place in Chittagong court Chinmay Krishna was standing in the court’s dock in front of the judge. “Even the judiciary in Bangladesh has become communalized and an appendage of the government ; but the government fears to act in any case for fear of a backlash that may be triggered by fundamentalist Jamatis” the report compiled by the rights body stated . If this continues, Bangladesh will be rid of minority presence sooner rather than later, the report added.
