Unakoti DM holds press conference on measles outbreak and vaccination

With infections of Measles and Rubella rising in Bangladesh with corresponding rise in death toll, the Unakoti district administration has taken a special initiative to protect people from possible infections of the two diseases. The DM (Unakoti) Megha Jain spoke to the media in her office chamber in this regard and said that situation in the district pertaining to feared outbreak of Measles and Rubella is still stable and under control. “We are not taking any risk in the matter as our next door neighbor Bangladesh is already severely affected by Measles; we have already identified a section of children in Unakoti district who are yet to be vaccinated for Measles; we are launching a special drive within the next few days where all unvaccinated children up to the age of ten will be given vaccine carrying injections to inoculate them from possible attacks of Measles and Rubella” said DM Megha Jain. She also appealed to the common people through the media not to panick over the issue of Measles and Rubella attacks. The DM also urged people to come in immediate contact with the nearest health centre in case they notice red spots on bodies of children and high fever and added that the Unakoti district administration will spare no effort to eradicate any threat of Measles and Rubella attack in the district. The press conference today was also attended by NHM Joint MD Dr Nupur Debbarma, World Health Organisation (WHO) representative Dr Randip Saha and chief medical officer (CMO), Unakoti Dr Sandipan Bhattacharjee.

Meanwhile, reports from the across the border confirmed the gravity of the Measle attack in Bangladesh. Already 512 people, mostly children have died of Measle attack and there are 426 more suspected cases across the country. Besides, altogether 8494 cases of confirmed infections and a whopping 62 thousand more suspected cases have come to the notice of Bangladesh health service authorities over the past few months. Alarmed by this development the state health service department is also initiating measures to prevent any outbreak of Measles and Rubella in Tripura.
