Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court, Justice MS Ramachandra Rao, called upon students to reduce excessive dependence on digital media and electronic devices, stating that prolonged use of gadgets adversely affects concentration, memory retention and the overall learning process.
He was addressing a felicitation programme organized by Auxilium Girls’ School for the toppers of the CBSE Board Examinations of Classes X and XII at the school auditorium in Agartala.
Speaking before students, teachers, parents and invited guests, Justice Rao stressed that true success in studies can only be achieved through focused learning, disciplined effort, proper time management and determination. He observed that in today’s highly competitive world, distractions created by excessive use of mobile phones and digital platforms are becoming a major challenge for students.
“Success in studies is a combination of focused study, sustained effort, effective time management, maintaining good health and learning to cope with exam stress,” the Chief Justice said.
He further stated that prolonged use of electronic media has been scientifically linked to loss of concentration, reduced focus in studies and deterioration of memory capacity.
Quoting a motivational thought during his speech, Justice Rao remarked, “In school, you’re taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you’re given a test that teaches you a lesson.” He emphasized that there are no shortcuts to success either in academics or in life.
The Chief Justice said the present generation is witnessing intense competition in the employment sector and noted that students who perform well academically, while also developing knowledge, discipline and practical skills, would have greater opportunities in both government and non-government sectors.
He observed that education should not be viewed merely as a means to secure high marks, but as a process of shaping one’s future, character and personality. Encouraging students to identify their individual strengths and interests, Justice Rao said, “Look at where the world is heading, then look at what you are drawn to. Where those two meet is a good place to begin. You do not need perfect clarity. All you need is direction.”
Referring to an article titled Beyond the Marksheet by P Muralidharan published in The Hindu, Justice Rao said marks only indicate where a student stands at present and do not define the person or determine the future. “What matters is what you do thereafter,” he remarked.
Addressing students who may not have achieved their expected results, the Chief Justice urged them not to lose confidence or become disheartened. Instead, he advised them to analyze their shortcomings, learn from setbacks and move ahead with renewed determination and self-belief.
“Own the win and also the miss. Both will teach you something,” he said, adding that success should not make students careless or overconfident, while failure should not make them harsh on themselves.
Justice Rao also addressed parents during the programme and appealed to them not to create unnecessary pressure on children regarding examination performance. He said children require emotional support, encouragement and a positive environment at home to grow into confident and responsible individuals.
“The most successful people are those who learn to understand themselves and keep moving forward through both success and failure,” he observed.
Congratulating all the toppers of Classes X and XII, the Chief Justice appreciated their disciplined hard work and concentration. He also acknowledged the role played by teachers and parents in the students’ achievements.
He said a large part of students’ success is attributable to the untiring efforts of teachers and the unwavering support of parents. He urged the toppers to inspire other students through similar dedication, discipline and focus.
Stating that education is not merely about earning degrees, Justice Rao said education should widen knowledge, help people understand the truth about life and contribute towards improving society and the world around them.
Principal of Auxilium Girls’ School, Sister Joplin Suchiang, expressed happiness over the school once again achieving outstanding results in the CBSE Board examinations and congratulated the teachers, students and guardians for the remarkable success.
The programme was attended by a large number of students, school management committee members, parents, teachers and well-wishers. Eva Saroch, wife of chief justice MS Ramachandra Rao attended the function as Guest of Honour, while Jayanta Debnath, Founder, Managing Director and Editor of tripurainfo.com, attended as Special Guest.
The event concluded with the felicitation of meritorious students and a message of encouragement and motivation for all students preparing for future academic and professional challenges.
