A delegation of Godrej Agrovet Limited on Thursday met Tripura Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath to discuss expansion of oil palm cultivation and related infrastructure projects in the state.
The delegation included Sougata Niyogi, CEO of the company’s oil palm business, along with research and development officials and experts associated with the sector.
During the meeting, discussions were held on ongoing oil palm cultivation projects in Unakoti, Dhalai and North Tripura districts being managed by the company.
According to officials, the delegation informed the minister that oil palm cultivation in tea estates had yielded encouraging results without affecting tea plantations or oil palm crops. The company also expressed interest in expanding oil palm plantations in tea gardens across the state.
The delegation briefed the minister on the proposed research and development centre at Nalkata and plans for setting up a Centre of Excellence in Tripura.
Officials said the proposed facility is expected to function as a training and learning centre for farmers, researchers and scientists. The company also sought land allocation from the state government for the project.
The meeting also discussed establishment of an oil palm processing mill at Nalkata, seed garden development, progeny testing, fertiliser allocation and expansion of oil palm plantations in government orchards.
Nath assured the delegation of the state government’s support and directed officials concerned to examine proposals related to expansion of oil palm cultivation in the state, officials said.
