Police in Tripura’s North district have arrested a Bangladeshi national for allegedly entering India illegally and living in the state by concealing his identity, officials said on Thursday.

The accused, identified as Mohammad Harun (45), a resident of Pakuya village under Patuakhali district in Bangladesh, was apprehended from Laxminagar village under Churaibari police station limits on Wednesday night following specific inputs, police said.

According to investigators, Harun had allegedly been residing in the area for a considerable period by using a Hindu name and adopting local religious practices to avoid suspicion.

Officer-in-charge of Churaibari police station Debabrata Biswas said a case had been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.

Police said the accused was booked under case number 19/26 and an investigation was underway to ascertain how he entered the country and managed to stay in the area without valid documents.

During preliminary interrogation, Harun allegedly told investigators that he had entered India after facing severe financial difficulties and debt in Bangladesh, the officer said.

Police officials said they were also examining whether any local persons had assisted him in obtaining shelter or concealing his identity.

Security agencies in Tripura have intensified surveillance along the Indo-Bangladesh border in recent months amid concerns over illegal infiltration and cross-border movement, officials added.
