In a significant achievement in the field of public health and child care, the state of Tripura has registered a substantial decline in the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), reflecting remarkable progress in maternal and child healthcare services across the state.
According to the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) Bulletin 2024 published by the Registrar General of India in May 2026, Tripura has recorded an IMR of only 12, which is considerably lower than the All India average of 24.
The latest data highlights a steady and consistent improvement in the state’s health indicators over the last three years. Tripura’s IMR has progressively declined from 17 in 2022 to 15 in 2023 and further down to 12 in 2024. In comparison, the national IMR figures stood at 26 in 2022, 25 in 2023, and 24 in 2024.
The achievement is being viewed as a major milestone for the state’s healthcare sector, particularly in the areas of neonatal and maternal healthcare. Health experts and officials attribute the success to sustained improvements in institutional healthcare delivery systems and extensive community-level interventions. Strengthening of Special Newborn Care Units (SNCU) and Newborn Stabilization Units (NBSU), improvement in institutional delivery services across urban and rural areas, expansion of immunization coverage, enhanced maternal healthcare and antenatal services, community-based healthcare interventions, awareness programmes, and better monitoring and emergency referral mechanisms for newborns and mothers have played a crucial role in this accomplishment.
Reacting to the achievement, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed satisfaction and gratitude over the state’s progress. In a message shared on his Facebook account, Dr. Saha thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda for extending continuous support to improve healthcare services in Tripura.
The Chief Minister stated that the state government remains committed to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and ensuring quality medical services for mothers and children even in the remotest areas of the state.
The sharp decline in IMR is expected to further strengthen Tripura’s position among the better-performing states in healthcare and social development indicators in the country.
