The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) under the leadership of veteran Gopal Roy and Youth Congress president Neelkamal Saha today observed the 36th death anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi who had been assassinated by the Sri Lankan LTTE militants in a suicide bombing on this day in 1991 at Sri Perumbudur in Tamil Nadu . Since the PCC president Asish Kumar Saha is away in Delhi and veteran leader and MLA Sudip Roybarman is preoccupied with other important programme they could not attend the ceremonial observance in the Congress Bhawan this morning. The former PCC president and sitting MLA Birajit Sinha observed the day in the Congress office at Kailasahar in Unakoti district.

In the main programme in Congress Bhawan today a gathering of Congress leaders and workers headed by Gopal Chandra Roy and Youth Congress president Neel Kamal Saha offered floral tributes to a portrait of the assassinated former prime minister and observed a minute’s silence . Having completed this the gathering of Congress workers silently marched to the Gandhighat area within a short distance of Congress Bhawan to offer floral tributes to the martyrs column built in memory of Rajiv Gandhi.

Later speaking to media persons former PCC president and sitting MLA Gopal Chandra Roy said that the martyrdom day of Rajiv Gandhi is a very important day in the Congress’s annual calendar. “Today when the country is reeling under the oppressive misrule of BJP we are reminded of our revered leader Rajiv Gandhi and his vision for a developed India ; not only we Congressmen but the country at large today realize the depth the loss suffered by India from the assassination of Rajivji” said Gopal Roy. He also nostalgically recalled that it was Rajivji who had envisioned the economic reforms in the country to build a developed India and this was reflected in the very first budget presented by his government in 1985 when the first steps towards liberalization of the economy and foreign direct investment had been initiated. “We hope that the present dark era in India under BJP’s misrule and politics of deception will blow away soon and a new Congress government headed by Rahulji will take India forward by working on the vision that revered Rajivji had outlined for the country” said Gopal Roy.
