Two youths from Bihar were arrested for allegedly snatching a gold chain from an elderly woman in West Tripura district, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place at Tailarbond area under Srinagar police station limits earlier in the day, they said.

According to police, the accused entered the house of Radha Rani Debbarma on the pretext of cleaning utensils when no male member of the family was present.

The duo allegedly snatched a gold chain from the woman and fled on a motorcycle, police said.

Locals intercepted the accused at Kanchanmala market while they were attempting to escape and later handed them over to Amtali police along with the motorcycle used in the incident, officials said.

Police recovered the stolen gold chain and seized the motorcycle bearing registration number BR-39AH-8350.

The arrested persons were identified as Pawan Kumar and Nitish Kumar.

A complaint was lodged by the victim’s son, Parimal Debbarma, police said.

Investigators suspect the two accused may also be linked to similar incidents reported recently in Baroitila and Shivbari areas under Amtali police station limits, officials said.

A case has been registered and the accused will be produced before a local court on Thursday, police added.
