Former militants belonging to surrendered insurgent groups in Tripura on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Manik Saha demanding implementation of rehabilitation measures promised under the tripartite peace agreement signed with the state and central governments.
Representatives of the organisation met the chief minister at the state secretariat and placed a three-point charter of demands, warning of a larger agitation across the state if the issues were not addressed by May 29.
Organisation convenor Amrit Reang alleged that many former insurgents were yet to receive rehabilitation benefits and other facilities assured under the agreement signed at the time of surrender.
He said the surrendered members had returned to the mainstream after placing trust in the government’s assurances, but several of them were now facing difficulties due to non-implementation of the promised measures.
The organisation claimed that there were irregularities and delays in providing rehabilitation support, financial assistance and other government benefits to the former militants.
The memorandum urged the chief minister to intervene and ensure early implementation of the pending demands.
The organisation also said it would launch a state-wide movement if the demands were not fulfilled within the stipulated deadline.
There was no immediate response from the state government on the allegations and demands raised by the organisation.
