Former Chief Minister and senior CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar on Tuesday alleged that political violence carried out by the ruling party reflects “weakness” and said no political force can strengthen its base through intimidation or coercion.
Sarkar made the remarks while speaking to reporters during his visit to the residence of CITU leader Tapan Das, whose house was recently attacked and vandalised.
He said all political parties should be allowed to function freely and maintain contact with the public without fear or obstruction. According to him, a democratic atmosphere is essential for healthy political activities.
Describing the attack on Das’s residence as politically motivated, Sarkar said parts of the house, including the entrance, had been damaged. He criticised such incidents, stating that violence has no place in a civilised society.
The veteran Left leader also recalled that Tapan Das’s father had been widely respected across political lines and had played an important role in building the party organisation in Jirania.
Sarkar further stated that some leaders of the ruling party had visited the family after the incident and reportedly acknowledged wrongdoing. He added that an offer of compensation for the damages was made but declined by the family members.
While describing the admission of mistake as a positive step, Sarkar maintained that such incidents should not occur in the first place.
