The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has asked the Director General of Police (DGP) to submit a detailed report regarding allegations of misconduct against a Superintendent of Police-rank officer.
The Commission took cognisance of reports published in two vernacular newspapers on May 17 alleging sexual misconduct involving a woman police officer. The matter was heard by the Commission headed by Justice Arindam Lodh.
According to the reports, a 2010-batch Tripura Police Service officer holding the rank of SP allegedly entered the residential quarters of a woman police officer and attempted to establish an inappropriate relationship with her after her husband had left the premises. The woman officer reportedly raised an alarm, prompting the accused officer to flee the spot.
The Commission observed that the allegations, if found true, could seriously damage public confidence in the police administration and send a negative message to society.
In its order, the Commission also noted that the newspaper reports did not clearly mention whether any formal case had been registered in connection with the incident.
Before proceeding further, the THRC said it considered it necessary to seek a factual report from the DGP. Copies of the newspaper clippings along with the Commission’s order have been forwarded to the police chief for necessary action.
The matter has been scheduled for hearing again after 20 days, by which time the Commission expects the report to be submitted.
