Police have arrested four persons, including a Bangladeshi national, in connection with an alleged abduction and ransom demand in Agartala city, officials said on Monday.

The accused have been identified as Rabil Miah, Iqbal Hossain, Jakir Hossain and Nishab Miah. Police said Nishab Miah is a Bangladeshi national and a separate case has been registered against him for illegally entering India.

Additional Public Prosecutor Alak Datta said the accused were produced before a court under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to abduction, criminal conspiracy and intimidation. Police sought a three-day remand for further investigation.

According to investigators, the incident took place on May 16 when a person was allegedly abducted from the Office Lane area of the city. The victim was later released, but the accused allegedly demanded ransom and threatened him during the captivity.

Addressing a press conference at West Agartala Police Station, Sadar SDPO Debaprasad Roy said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by West Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rana Chatterjee was formed soon after the incident.

Police said the abduction was carried out from in front of the court complex, one of the busiest areas in the city. Preliminary investigation revealed that six to seven persons were involved in the operation.

The kidnappers allegedly used a white Bolero vehicle and a scooter during the incident. Police have seized the scooter, while efforts are underway to recover the Bolero and arrest the remaining accused.

Raids are continuing in different locations as part of the investigation, police added.
