The police in Tripura, known mostly for incompetence, corruption and dereliction of duty, seem to have become hyper-active in their drive against content creators and social media activists and commentators. This was proved in the cases of Saikat Talapatra and Madhavi Biswas who perhaps deserved to be arrested and incarcerated on the basis of specific complaints filed by affected persons. However, the latest case involving a content creator Shipul Majumder is different in nature.
Shipul Majumder has been an enthusiastic commentator and content creator in social media , specially ‘Facebook’ and ‘Ýoutube’ on political issues and individuals. Recently , shortly after the results of the Assam assembly elections were declared Shipul has gone on a spree of posting audio-visual comments on the Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. His posts were marked by certain unsavoury comments in the background to support the AI-created visuals .
The police personnel in Santir Bazar subdivision under south Tripura took this into cognizance and yesterday arrested Shipul Majumder on the basis of a case registered suo moto. He is supposed to have been produced in court today in Belonia but his fate , as decided by the court, is still unknown . But the arrest of Shipul Majumder has triggered serious reaction among opposition parties and social media activists. Sources in the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) said that the matter is significant as earlier police registered no case when the SP (Sepahijala) and DSP Kamalpur had been assaulted by the ruling party workers while the Boxanagar MLA Tofazzel Hossain abused the officer in charge of Kalamchaura police station in the vilest language . “The police is legally empowered to take suo moto case but the arrest of social media activist Shipul Maumder on a suo moto case smacks of motivated action on the part of police because no complaint is reported to have been made by the Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma or anyone representing him; the police should also be cognizant of Article 19 of the constitution” sources in THRC said .
