Sources from Udaipur said that the District Magistrate of Gomati district has declared Monday as “Cycle Day” for all staff members of the District Magistrate’s office as part of a fuel conservation and environmental awareness initiative.
In view of this initiative, officials and staff members of the Gomati district administration on Monday witnessed a unique administrative gesture following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for fuel conservation and sustainable practices. However, a fresh debate on administrative symbolism, public responsibility, and humane working conditions has emerged in Tripura after Gomati District Magistrate Rinku Lathar, IAS was seen cycling to office as part of the initiative. The District Magistrate reportedly chose to travel to office on a bicycle instead of using an official vehicle in order to promote fuel saving and environmental awareness. The move was widely appreciated by many residents, who viewed it as a positive and symbolic step encouraging reduced fuel consumption amid growing concerns over energy conservation and environmental sustainability.Across Tripura and several other parts of the country, ministers, administrative officers, and political leaders have recently been adopting alternative modes of transport such as bicycles, auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws, and reduced security convoys in response to the Prime Minister’s appeal for responsible fuel usage. Many citizens described the initiative as inspiring and policy-oriented.
However, the incident quickly triggered criticism and emotional reactions on social media after visuals reportedly showed security personnel and accompanying staff running behind the District Magistrate while he cycled toward the office.
Several citizens questioned whether the symbolic act unintentionally placed physical strain and discomfort on the police personnel assigned for his protection. Critics argued that while the fuel-saving message was commendable, equal consideration should also have been given to the welfare and dignity of the accompanying security staff. Many social media users commented that the personnel accompanying the District Magistrate could also have been provided bicycles so they could move comfortably alongside him instead of running behind during the commute. One public reaction stated that the scene appeared uncomfortable and visually disturbing, while another commenter remarked that publicity-oriented gestures should not come at the cost of the hardship of support staff and security personnel.
Public reactions reflected a broader concern over balancing symbolic governance with humane administrative practices. Some citizens argued that bodyguards and police personnel are also human beings with families and responsibilities, and therefore deserve equal respect and practical working arrangements during such public initiatives.Another section of the public noted that if the official residence and office are located only a short distance apart, walking could have been a more practical and natural option instead of creating a situation where security personnel had to continuously run alongside. At the same time, many people maintained that the District Magistrate’s intention was positive and aligned with national efforts toward sustainability and fuel conservation. They suggested that future awareness initiatives could be implemented in a more coordinated manner where accompanying staff are also provided suitable transport arrangements.
The incident has now evolved into a larger public discussion on how government awareness campaigns should be executed without creating discomfort for subordinate staff or security personnel. While the bicycle ride succeeded in drawing attention to fuel conservation and environmental responsibility, the public discourse that followed has highlighted the importance of ensuring dignity, coordination, and humane treatment for all employees involved in such symbolic exercises.
The episode has become one of the most discussed local administrative topics in Tripura social media circles, with opinions sharply divided between appreciation for the eco-friendly initiative and criticism over its execution.
