The ‘Muinda’and ‘Bhil’tribal families rehabilitated by the erstwhile left front government in Nripen colony area under Raj Nagar assembly constituency of south Tripura confront a serious existential crisis on account of lack governmental assistance and denial of normal facilities like power supply and water problems . There is also not hope for relief in the immediate future as , despite many appeals, the administration has turned a blind eye to their woes.

Yesterday the former CPI (M) MLA of Raj Nagar Sudhan Das visited the distressed area and spoke to residents including the leading figure of the locality Dharmaraj Bhil. The Nripen colony area had been launched as a rehabilitation centre for seventy landless families belonging to ‘Munda’ and ‘Bhil’ tribal families in the year 1994. The families were also allotted 5 ‘kanis’of land for rubber cultivation in addition to homesteads for earning their livelihood. Besides, essential facilities like roads, power supply and water supply were also provided . An Anganwadi centre and a primary school had also been established in the colony. Dharmaraj Bhil was their leader as he still is.

But over the past more than eight years all essential facilities given by the government earlier have collapsed and the primary school is on the verge of closure due to shortage of teachers . The water supply system has become virtually non-functional and the road has already become almost unusable because of lack of maintenance and repair. To worsen matters, there is no work available under the MGNREGA scheme and the residents of Nripen colony are now down to a state of semi-starvation. The people of the area led by Dharmaraj Bhil told their tales of woes to former MLA Sudhan Das and sought relief. Sudhan Das told them the condition of entire rural and hilly areas of the state is similar because the BJP government has not kept its promises made to the people. He however assured the people that he would take up the issue with the higher authority in the government and urge upon them to take appropriate action to help the distressed people of Nripen Colony.
