A notorious woman trafficker who was in the habit of trapping women in love affair and later trafficking them to Bangladesh across the border or to brothels in other Indian states in lieu of hefty payment was arrested yesterday by police from Jogendra Nagar area of Agartala yesterday and later handed over to Madhupur police station in Bishalgarh subdivision where the crime actually originated.

Giving details police sources said that Shafiq Mia (32) , a resident of Brajendra Nagar village under Madhupur police station, had long been engaged in woman trafficking activity. Recently he had trapped the wife of one of his friends in fake love affair in order to finally sell her to a brothel either in Bangladesh or to a brothel in any major state in India. He had kept the house-wife first in a hotel at Agartala and left but on the next day he took her to a rented house under Amtoli police station.

Sources said that people there had developed suspicion about Shafiq’s movement and activities and , having realized this, he took the house-wife to another rented house near Jogendra Nagar mosque. But his talks over mobile phone with some unknown persons and reference to a deal and financial transactions aroused suspicion in the minds of the house-wife and she confided all this to a few people in Jogendra Nagar mosque area. Realising what had happened the people of Jogendra Nagar area stormed the rented house and detained both Shafiq and the house-wife before informing police in College Tilla outpost on Wednesday in the afternoon. Later at the intervention of the East Agartala police station both were handed over to the Madhupur police station yesterday. In the course of interrogation by police in the Madhupur police station Shafiq Mia confessed his crime and also how he had trafficked other women and said that he had a plan to send the woman to Bangladesh but the recent death of two Bangladeshi criminals along the border had created a problem in crossing over to that country and he had been forced to keep the woman in the rented house in Jogendra Nagar. Sources said that police is producing both Shafiq Mia and the woman to court in Bishalgarh today and , while the woman is likely to be released by the court, a strong charge-sheet will be filed against Shafiq Mia. The husband of the woman had already filed a complaint against her and Shafiq Mia with the Madhupur police station.
