Prominent Tripura photojournalist Bijay Debnath was allegedly assaulted today morning at a petrol pump located in the Radhanagar area of Agartala, triggering widespread resentment and concern among members of the media fraternity over the growing incidents of attacks on journalists.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place when an auto-rickshaw driver allegedly tried to collect petrol hurriedly without standing in the queue at the petrol pump. This led to a heated altercation and physical scuffle between the auto driver and another individual present at the spot.

At that moment, senior photojournalist Bijay Debnath attempted to capture photographs of the incident as part of his professional duty. However, the auto-rickshaw driver reportedly became aggressive and suddenly attacked Debnath. During the assault, Bijay Debnath sustained injuries on his face and reportedly started bleeding from his mouth.

After receiving information about the incident, personnel from East Agartala Police Station rushed to the spot and shifted the injured journalist to a hospital for medical treatment. The accused auto-rickshaw driver fled from the scene immediately after the attack. However, East Agartala police managed to seize the auto-rickshaw involved in the incident and have started an investigation.

The incident has generated sharp reactions among journalists across Tripura. Members of the media community expressed serious concern over the repeated harassment and attacks on journalists while performing their professional responsibilities.

Several journalists questioned the prevailing law and order situation, stating that incidents of journalist harassment are becoming alarmingly frequent. “Almost every day begins with news of journalists being attacked or harassed. How long will this continue?” many media persons asked while condemning the incident.

Journalists also pointed out that Bijay Debnath is known for his calm and non-confrontational nature, making the alleged unprovoked attack even more disturbing. They have demanded exemplary punishment against the accused auto-rickshaw driver and urged authorities to ensure the safety and security of media professionals in the state.

The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of journalists working on the ground and has intensified demands for stronger legal protection for media personnel in Tripura.
